Which IVF stimulation side effects are normal?
I am on day 7 of gonadotropin injections. My belly feels bloated, I am tired, and my ovaries hurt a little when I walk. When is this normal and when should I worry about OHSS?
Short answer: Mild bloating, fatigue and pelvic heaviness are common during stimulation. Rapid weight gain, severe bloating, vomiting, shortness of breath or reduced urine need urgent review for ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
Answer #1
Common stimulation symptoms
As follicles grow, ovaries enlarge and produce more estrogen. Mild bloating, breast tenderness, mood swings and pelvic pressure are expected. Rest, loose clothes and the diet your clinic advised usually help. Report any sharp increase in symptoms between scans.

Answer #2
OHSS is uncommon but important
OHSS risk rises with high follicle counts, very high estradiol, PCOS, or a fresh transfer after a large retrieval. Antagonist protocols and freeze-all strategies reduce severe OHSS. If you feel rapidly worse after trigger or retrieval, contact the clinic the same day.

Call your clinic or go to the hospital the same day if you have
- Sudden severe abdominal swelling or pain
- Vomiting that prevents fluids
- Shortness of breath or chest pain
- Little urine output
- Weight gain over 1 kg in 24 hours
