When is ICSI needed instead of conventional IVF?
Semen analysis is near normal. The clinic still recommends ICSI for all eggs. Is that necessary?
Short answer: ICSI is clearly indicated for significant male factor, prior fertilisation failure, or use of surgically retrieved sperm. For unexplained or tubal factor with normal semen, conventional IVF can be appropriate; routine ICSI for all is debated and should be justified.
Answer #1
Clear ICSI indications
ICSI injects one sperm into each mature egg and is standard for oligoasthenoteratozoospermia, azoospermia with TESE/PESA sperm, antisperm antibodies in selected cases, and prior total fertilisation failure. It is also used with frozen-thawed eggs in many protocols.

Answer #2
Ask why ICSI is proposed for you
If semen parameters are normal and there is no prior fertilisation problem, ask whether the lab uses ICSI routinely for logistics or for a specific risk in your case. Split IVF/ICSI is sometimes used when fertilisation risk is uncertain. Understand cost differences and fertilisation reporting before consent.

Get matched to one ART-registered clinic after consent — not a directory of calls.
Answers are general education for patients in India, not a diagnosis or personal medical advice. Best IVF Centers is a fertility matching service, not a clinic or hospital. Always follow your treating doctor's instructions. In an emergency, go to the nearest hospital.
