Is frozen embryo transfer better than fresh transfer?
After retrieval my doctor suggested freeze-all and FET next month instead of a fresh transfer. Is frozen safer or less successful?
Short answer: For many modern cycles, especially with high response or OHSS risk, freeze-all with later FET is preferred. Live-birth rates with frozen transfers are comparable and sometimes better in selected groups, with a safer hormone environment.
Answer #1
Why freeze-all is often advised
High estradiol after stimulation can make the uterus less receptive and raise OHSS risk if pregnancy occurs immediately. Freezing embryos lets the body recover, then a programmed or natural FET prepares the lining more gently. Embryo survival after vitrification in good labs is high.

Answer #2
Fresh transfer still has a role
Fresh transfer may be considered with moderate response, good lining, low OHSS risk and patient preference after counselling. The choice should be individual, not based on a generic claim that one approach always wins. Ask your clinic for their lab thaw-survival and pregnancy data.

Call your clinic or go to the hospital the same day if you have
- Severe bloating after retrieval suggesting OHSS
- Fever after retrieval
- Heavy bleeding
