Is day 5 blastocyst transfer always better than day 3?
We had only four embryos. The clinic wants to grow them to day 5 but I fear none will survive. Should we transfer on day 3?
Short answer: Blastocyst transfer helps select embryos more likely to implant when several are available. With very few embryos, day 3 transfer can be reasonable so that embryos are not lost in culture—decision is individual.
Answer #1
Why labs like day 5
Many chromosomally abnormal embryos arrest before blastocyst. Culturing to day 5 improves selection and supports single embryo transfer strategies. Cumulative outcomes also depend on freeze quality and patient age.

Answer #2
When day 3 is considered
If only a few embryos exist, some teams transfer on day 3 to avoid the risk that none reach blastocyst in vitro—even though some would have implanted in the uterus. Ask your lab about their low-number embryo policy and live-birth data.
