Is spotting normal after a day 5 embryo transfer?
I had a frozen day 5 blastocyst transfer 6 days ago and noticed light brown spotting this morning. I am on vaginal progesterone and estradiol. Is this normal, and should I keep taking my medicines? My beta hCG is in 6 days.
Short answer: Light brown spotting after transfer is common and does not mean the cycle has failed. Continue all prescribed medicines and wait for the blood beta hCG. Heavy bleeding, clots, severe pain or fever need same-day clinic contact.
Answer #1
Why spotting happens after transfer
Spotting after transfer has several ordinary causes. Implantation can cause light bleeding around 5 to 10 days after a day 5 transfer. The catheter can irritate the cervix, and vaginal progesterone often causes brown discharge. Many women who spot in early pregnancy go on to have healthy pregnancies. Spotting alone cannot confirm or rule out pregnancy.

Answer #2
Watch the amount, not only the colour
A few spots that need only a panty liner differ from bleeding that fills a pad. Use a pad so you can judge the amount. Avoid intercourse and heavy exercise until your clinic clears you. One-sided severe pain needs same-day care even with little bleeding.

Answer #3
Do not stop progesterone or estradiol
Continue every medicine exactly as prescribed even if you see spotting. Stopping suddenly or changing the dose yourself can harm the lining that supports the embryo. If spotting increases, call your clinic and let the treating doctor decide next steps.
