Should thyroid and prolactin be corrected before IVF?
TSH is 6.8 mIU/L and prolactin is mildly high. Can we start IVF injections next week or should we wait?
Short answer: Overt thyroid dysfunction and significant hyperprolactinemia are usually optimised before stimulation or transfer. Mild abnormalities are common; your doctor will decide thresholds, medication and whether a short delay is safer.
Answer #1
Thyroid targets in fertility care
Many fertility clinics aim for TSH in a tighter preconception range than the general lab reference, often using levothyroxine when TSH is elevated. Uncontrolled hypothyroidism can affect ovulation and pregnancy outcomes. Recheck levels after dose changes before major procedures when time allows.

Answer #2
Mild prolactin elevation
Stress, medicines and even breast stimulation can raise prolactin. Persistent elevation may need imaging or dopamine agonists. Mild rises sometimes do not block IVF if the rest of the workup is ready—but discuss rather than ignore the report. Do not start or stop thyroid/prolactin drugs on internet advice.

Call your clinic or go to the hospital the same day if you have
- Severe headache with vision changes and very high prolactin
- Symptoms of thyroid storm or severe hypo/hyperthyroidism
Want help finding a clinic?
Get matched to one ART-registered clinic after consent — not a directory of calls.
Answers are general education for patients in India, not a diagnosis or personal medical advice. Best IVF Centers is a fertility matching service, not a clinic or hospital. Always follow your treating doctor's instructions. In an emergency, go to the nearest hospital.
